Tarmac surfacing

Tarmac is durable, practical and quick to lay. It's a common choice for family homes in town and for wider parking areas in the villages.

Built up from the base

We excavate the old drive and enough clay to make room for a deep stone sub-base, laid over a membrane and compacted. Then hot tarmac goes down in two courses, binder and surface, each rolled firm. Kerbs or block edges hold the sides.

Falls on a flat site

On flat ground, water has nowhere to run unless we give it a route. We lay tarmac with gentle falls towards a channel drain, soakaway or planted area, so it doesn't sit in puddles or run towards the house. Because tarmac is impermeable, that's also how a front garden drive stays within the planning rules.

Finishes

Black tarmac with a red or charcoal block edge is a classic look. Red tarmac is available for a warmer finish.

Early care

New tarmac takes a few weeks to harden fully, especially in warm weather. Avoid turning wheels on the spot and heavy point loads until then.
