Porous by design
In a resin-bound system, aggregate is mixed with resin before laying and trowelled smooth. The small voids that remain let rainwater pass straight through. It's very different from resin-bonded surfacing, where stone is scattered on top of resin and the surface is sealed.
The base and the clay
Water that passes through the resin needs somewhere to go. We lay resin on porous asphalt or no-fines concrete over an open-graded stone sub-base. On heavy clay that drains slowly, we may add an outlet to a soakaway or drain so the base doesn't stay waterlogged.
Overlaying
An existing tarmac or concrete drive can sometimes be overlaid if it's sound and can drain. Many older drives on clay have cracked or settled, and then replacement is the better option.
Colours
Golds, buffs and bronzes complement red brick; silvers and greys suit render and timber cladding. UV-stable resin keeps lighter blends from yellowing.
